Knowledge Is Power

Knowledge...knowledge...knowledge... Such an important term that some people just take for advantage and others don't have the proper chance of acquiring. Do you agree that "knowledge is power" or do you think that this is an exaggerated statement?

I just feel like this is an understatement if anything. The reason is because if you think about it, anything can be taken away or robbed from a person in a way, except for his knowledge. Think of money, health, and other possessions. All these in one or another are fragile elements or qualities in a person. On the other hand, knowledge is a strong, elite characteristic that no one can take away or break... As weird as it may sound, have you ever heard on the news that someone was robbed off his knowledge? You might hear about a certain restaurant, bank, or a car that has been robbed, or maybe even important information on a system that has been hacked into...but not an individual's knowledge.

Beyond the literal meaning of "power", knowledge may provide individuals with a strong basis for making decisions, equip you with logical, critical thinking, and even make you superior over others when it comes to meetings or gatherings. One way knowledge personally helped me was provide me with a good platform for logical thinking. I studied engineering for my undergraduate degree and noticed over the years that it helped me become more independent, logical in thinking, and helped me grow as a person. Part of the credit goes to just growing up over the years and living alone, but a significant portion goes to studying in university, especially engineering. Moreover, along with logical thinking comes decision making and more importantly better decisions.

Also, ever been in a meeting or just a casual gathering where you had no idea what your colleagues or friends are talking about? How does that feel? Feels like you have no contribution to the group because you don't know about the subject they're discussing. Well, that's alright because no one knows everything. However, what if you were actually knowledgeable of the subject and could contribute with quality information. Wouldn't that feel more satisfying and make you feel a lot of self worth? Having knowledge in as many areas as possible is just another way to be successful in life.

One thing you can do to achieve general knowledge is to gain as low as one new piece of information a day. Over the course of a month that yields 30 new pieces of information, which is significant and that's only one new piece of information a day. I will let you imagine how much knowledge you can obtain in a month time if you only learn about two or three new things a day. More important than the quantity is the quality and consistency. You can gain knowledge everyday but then decide to stop after two or three months. However, what is really important is being consistent and maintaining a steady pace in gaining knowledge.

Lastly, a lot of people like to hang out with individuals that are knowledgeable and some others don't care. Would you prefer to spend time and get to know someone who is self-motivated and possesses knowledgeable you can learn from or just someone who knows little or nothing about a given topic?

Anyone wanna share what sparked your interest in general knowledge or knowledge in general? How did this knowledge help you? Share your thoughts....
